AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) makes your content easy to extract as a direct answer; GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) makes your brand and content trusted enough for generative AI to cite. AEO asks "can AI lift my answer?" and GEO asks "will AI trust me as the source?". Most pages need both.
The two definitions
- AEO: structuring content so answer engines such as featured snippets, Google AI Overviews and voice assistants can pull a short, direct answer from it.
- GEO: improving the signals that lead generative engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot to select and cite your content: entity clarity, authorship, freshness, sources and crawler access.
Side by side
| Aspect | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Core question | Can AI extract my answer? | Will AI trust and cite me? |
| Unit that wins | A passage | A source and its brand entity |
| Top signals | Answer-first opening, question headings, FAQ, quotable passages | AI crawler access, Organization entity, author, facts, freshness |
| Typical failure | Answer buried under a long intro | Great answer, but AI cannot tell who wrote it or whether it is current |
Where they overlap
Some signals count for both: AI search bots must be able to crawl the page, structured data must be valid, snippets must be allowed and passages must be quotable. That is why the scoring gives these factors weight in both the AEO and GEO score.
Which should you fix first?
Fix the lower score first. If your AEO score is higher, your answers are fine but AI has little reason to trust you: add Organization schema, an author, dates and sources. If your GEO score is higher, AI knows who you are but cannot easily lift an answer: add an answer-first opening, question headings and an FAQ. The free AEO GEO Checker shows both scores and tells you which gap is bigger.
Two quick examples
A SaaS pricing page often scores high on GEO (company schema, clear brand) but low on AEO, because the price is in a graphic and no sentence says "Plans start at $19 a month". A blog post often scores the opposite: a clear answer, but no author, no date and no sources.
